KMART CORPORATION REPORTS MAY SALES

TROY, Mich., June 1, 2000 -- Kmart Corporation (NYSE: KM) today reported that May total consolidated sales increased 2.7% to $2.847 billion for the four-week period ended May 24, 2000 compared with $2.772 billion for the same period last year. Consolidated sales increased 0.9% on a comparable store basis for the same period.

Sales from consolidated operations for the 17 weeks ended May 24, 2000 were $11.042 billion, up 1.8% from $10.850 billion for the first 17 weeks of 1999. On a comparable store basis, consolidated sales rose 0.2% for the same period.

Categories showing particular strength for May included home appliances, home décor, outdoor living, outdoor sporting goods and seasonal, as well as ladies apparel, jewelry, consumables and pharmaceuticals.
