When America's communities are struck by tornadoes, fires, floods,
hurricanes and other catastrophes, Kmart is there to help. In 1999, Kmart
Corporation made a five-year pledge of $1 million to support American Red Cross
disaster relief efforts at the local and national levels. This pledge
deepens Kmart's decade-long commitment to the American Red Cross and ensures
that help will be provided to the communities Kmart serves during a time of
need.
As a National Disaster Relief Partner of the Red Cross and the only mass retailer in Manhattan, Kmart felt compelled to provide whatever was needed - blankets, gloves, Visine or American flags - when the September 11, 2001 attack on America happened. With two stores within the disaster site and many others in the area that surrounds Manhattan, Kmart tried to make life as simple and comfortable as possible for the people in the immediate area. The company's Astor Place K-Café was turned into a rest stop for the emergency relief workers and essentials from food to clean underclothes were donated on a continuous basis.
In addition, Kmart.com (formerly Bluelight.com) made a special purchase of American flags and American flag T-shirts, not typically available on the site, and began selling them September 14, 2001. Consumer response was overwhelming and the supply of products was exhausted in a week. BlueLight.com raised more than $230,000 for the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund through this promotion.
Kmart associates across the country rallied their support of September 11 by donating and raising funds for their local Chapters of the American Red Cross.
After the terrible Tsunami that struck on December 26, 2004 Kmart associates and customers contributed to in-store and online
(www.kmart.com) donation efforts.
The money was raised for the American Red Cross International Relief Fund to aid the victims of this disaster.
